Word: No More Boring Bullets

If you want to move away from the standard word bullet, select the bulleted list and then select Format, Bullets and Numbering from the menu.  On the Bulleted tab, click the Customize button.  (If the customized button is grayed out, select a bullet style in the box, then click the button).  There are three options:  Font, Character or Picture.

Font:  You can change the color, size etc. of your bullet here, in much the same way you change the size, color of a font.

Character:  Allows you to select a symbol from any of Office’s font sets as a bullet.

Picture:  Click the Picture tab to display a variety of bullets.  Select the bullet you want to use, then click OK until you have exited all dialog boxes.

The next time you select Bullets and Numbering, your new bullet selection will display as a dialog box choice (without your having to go through the customization process again).

Excel:  Using Workspaces

If you are working on a project that necessitates your opening a number of Excel files at the same time, you might consider using Excel’s Workspace feature,   which allows you to open multiple workbooks at once.  Click here for details.

Excel:  Using Drop Down Lists for Data Validation

Data validation gives you the ability to set “rules” pertaining to data entered on a worksheet.  For example, you might want to insure that entries for certain cells are confined to those that are on a drop down list.  Click here for details.

Outlook:  Managing Delivery and Read Receipts

Delivery and Read Receipts are the notices that Outlook sends you whenever an email you send has been delivered to, and read by, the recipient.   The option to receive these receipts can be applied to individual emails, or globally, so that you receive a receipt for every email that you send.  While you might think this would clutter your Inbox with receipts, the truth is that you can configure Outlook to efficiently manage the way receipts are handled.  Click here for details.

Outlook: Sending a Distribution List to Another User

There might be times when you want to share a distribution list with another user.  You can do this by emailing the distribution list.

  1. Open your Contacts and click one time on the distribution list (or contact) that you want to send.  To select multiple distribution lists/contacts, hold down the Ctrl key while clicking.
  2. Press Ctrl+F
  3. The distribution list displays in an email message.
  4. Complete and send the email message.

All the recipient has to do is open the email message, then drag the distribution list icon to his or her Contacts folder.

Internet Explorer:  Eliminating Run Time Errors

This comes up all the time…..when you access a web site, you receive a “Run Time” error.  To correct this, open Internet Explorer and from the menu, select Tools, Internet Options.  Click the Advanced tab. In the Browsing section of the dialog box, make sure that Disable Script Debugging is checked, and that Display a notification about every script error is unchecked.  (Note:  You may have to repeat this procedure from time to time.  Apparently updates to IE sometimes cause that setting to revert back to the default.)
